{DIY} Picnic Blanket & A Romantic Picnic Date!

During the warm summer months meals are often enjoyed outdoors, so it is no surprise that July has been deemed National Picnic Month.  Picnics are typically casual affairs enjoyed outdoors with family, friends or even an intimate occasion for two.  Planning a picnic?  You’ll want to pack a bountiful picnic basket and a blanket to enjoy the simple pleasure of dining outdoors.

With this simple DIY project you can make your summer picnics memorable with your own one-of-a-kind picnic blanket and a delicious and bountiful basket.  Inspired by this blanket from Twig & Thistle I decided to create my own custom picnic blanket for a romantic date.

What you’ll need to:

  • 1 drop cloth (available in the paint section at home improvement stores)
  • 1 small container of paint in desired color
  • 1 stencil or 1 roll of 2 inch ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape to create your own pattern
  • 1 small paint roller
I purchased a large drop cloth from Lowe’s Home Improvement  for $7.98 (I recommend using one with a plastic liner on the back) and decided to use a wall stencil to create my desired pattern.  After measuring the area I wanted to paint (I wanted a border both on the outside and inside of the pattern) I placed the stencil on the drop cloth and secured each corner with painter’s tape.
Dip your roller in your desired paint color (I used paint a friend had leftover from another project) and carefully roll over your stencil.  Move the stencil until your entire area has been covered.
I wanted to personalize my picnic blanket so I added our monogram to the center.  I cut out vinyl letters using my Cricut and then placed the template in the center and carefully painted the letters on.
With a little paint and a few simple supplies I had a beautiful custom picnic blanket perfect for a date with my hubby.
A picnic is a classic, economical way to spend a romantic meal with your partner.  It can easily be altered to suit almost any meal or location and with a few extra touches and details you and your loved one can enjoy a simple, romantic and relaxing summer evening outdoors.  I put together our picnic with some of our favorite summer recipes and simple store bought items I dressed up with a few extra details,  like the custom labels, twine and handmade treat bags.
I bought sandwiches from our local deli and wrapped them in parchment paper and tied them with yellow twine.
I made one of my favorite summer sides dishes, Orzo Pasta with Artichokes & Asparagus.  I made individual servings by placing them in jelly jars with lids spray painted to match my custom labels.
Along with our sandwiches and pasta salad we also had a variety of cheeses, crackers, salami, olives and fresh fruit.
Finally, for a sweet treat I placed store bought chocolate chip cookies in wax glassine bags.  I used a small doily, cupcake liner and an enjoy sticker to embellish the top of the bag.
Pick a beautiful location and take a few pillows and books along with you for a relaxing evening with your date.

Summer Entertaining – A Pool Party Bash

I can not believe I did not share this here last year when we did this darling pool party. It was on Amy Atlas and then I must have been so over the moon for my first AAD feature that I forgot to share ALL the photos with you. I did however put together a slideshow. But finally here they are and just in time to hopefully inspire you to plan some summer parties with your friends and family-just because!

The perfect setting is poolside with lots of comfy pillows and parasols.

Some sweet refreshments are key. We served sparkling lemonade and Italian Sodas.

Some easy to grab goodies are key. We served these layered jello cups, rice krispy treats, cupcakes (of course!), popcorn (easy for the kids to grab a cone and go, and a lemon meringue pie.

These cute little guys are marsapan in fruit shapes that we just stuck a lollipop in and attached a cute flag.

Pulling flowers from the garden in beautiful vases is a staple to any outdoor entertaining. It softens your table and creates a beautiful focal point.

These pillows were such a find at World Market! The whole collection had not only pillows but table runners and matching napkins. They were so beautiful and my little one was so tuckered out, she had a nice spot to recline.

I hope you have some great ideas for your next weekend get together!! This is exactly what I wish I was doing right now!!

Our pool party collection is available in our shop now!

{Blissful Customers}- An Airplane Party

I had been dying to do a Airplane Party for awhile and was so excited when Jennine contacted me to do one in RED and TURQUOISE! I LOVE those colors together and thought that keeping it bold and graphic would be fun.

Jennine said she got most her inspiration from Hostess With The Mostess and from BN parties. You all know how I adore that fabric from Ikea and it is fabulous in that red.

I also love wrapping boxes for height in the fabric of the runner or back drop or even in coordinating decorative paper.

Coordinating cookies are so cute to carry out the theme. These are wrapped up so cute so the guests can take them home.

Such a darling cake and how adorable is that cake topper??!! Jennine said she found it at the last minute on etsy (source).

It is so important to remember that there is so much more to a party than a dessert table (as fabulous as they are!) Jennine had such great attention to detail!

Seriously crushing on those trays!

You may remember when we did this “First Year Remembrance tree” for Parker’s first birthday. I think it is such a sweet idea to share with your guest a year in the child’s life being celebrated.

Even the food display can make a big impact!

Darling mini gumball machines for favors. So cute!

And how darn cute is he??!

Jennine thank you so much for sharing this darling pictures! Can’t wait for the next party with you!!

Minnesota Spring Shopping Boutique

Hey guys, it’s Michelle here, and I’m so excited to share the course of events from this weekend!  I’ve never talked so much about fairies and circuses, that’s for sure!  Friday I set up our new Fairy and Circus collection at a Spring boutique here in the Twin Cities and the reception was unbelievable!  I loved seeing the faces of everyone as they stood there and stared, which made me realize that not everyone’s life has been taken over by party blogs and most women don’t lie awake at night thinking of how to design their next get together!  But luckily, that’s where we jump in!  After wrapping up Friday’s event, I was asked to set up the display at another Spring showcase on Sunday…so I packed up the goodies and headed to the other side of town to, once again, talk about fairies and circuses!  I had a great weekend, made some great contacts and can’t wait to start working on the upcoming parties that were booked!

Circus Party: Colors were red, turquoise and a pale yellow.  We had limited space at this event, but you should be able to tell what we used if you were to spread everything apart!

A big thank you to Mary from Cookies & Cakes by Mary who did a spectacular job on these circus cookies with only 4 days notice!  The details on them were amazing and the colors went perfectly!

Trust me, they were yummy!

These popcorn cupcakes were one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen.  The kids who came by also chose this as their favorite part of the display! So easy to do and were a great conversation starter!

I loved the combo of these colors…it gave such a vibrant, happy feel!

You can’t have a Circus party without cotton candy!  For future reference though, cotton candy doesn’t sit out well.  Over time it will shrink and become very hard, so make sure it’s one of the last things you put out on your table if you want it to last.

Fairy Party:  Colors used were pink, green and red.  I wanted to make it seem completely girly with the tutu ribbon around the cake, cookie wands and soft pink cupcakes.  The pixy dust was a cute add on to decorate their cupcakes…why not add more sparkle?!

Once again, Mary from Cookies & Cakes by Mary are to credit for these adorable fondant mushrooms on top of the Fairy cake as well as the wand cookies you’ll see below.

Little girls’ eyes got wide at these fairy wand cookies.  I’m surprised they all stayed on the table!

We loved creating these two parties and are excited to announce that they’re ready in our Etsy shop!

Michelle with Tara from Shindig Diva, so happy she stopped by!
